An intense ruby red that verges towards an inky black at the centre of the glass, this 2007 Masi “Riserva di Costasera” Amarone offers up both pronounced aromas and obvious alcoholic legs (that represent the 15.5% abv of this wine) when it is swirled. Leading with characteristically dark cherry, clove spice, prune and cedar aromas, this 2007 “Riserva di Costasera” shows both the aromatic cues that define this region of production and a clear suggestion of a unique identity of its own.
Dark, rich and prodigiously structured in the mouth, this 2007 Masi “Riserva di Costasera” Amarone hails from what most will agree was a fantastic vintage in Valpolicella and it really does show through in this wine. Dark cherry, plum jam and prune are layered to form a linear and persistent base layer to this Amarone, with espresso, clove, bitter dark chocolate and vanilla adding nuance. Despite the notable sense of structure to this 2007 “Riserva di Costasera” it never comes across as overbearing (and is in fact beautifully integrated) and the acidity that cleanses the palate as the unrelenting finish of this Amarone eventually fades offers impressive cellaring potential.
